The O'Donnell clan are traced back to 1474 in the area of Lough Eske and kept their 'island prison' on the lake during their time here. The O'Donnell's held court in Donegal for 133 years and it wasn't until 1607 that the reign came to an end with the Flight of the Earls from Rathmullen of that year.
